bearing it all

most.

E. Durieu, 1854

yesterday and just today-  I was trying to catch up with some of my favorite blogs. I save some for the weekend when I am not distracted or if I am busy during the week and can not fit them all in. I read many and I read much. When I leave a comment on a post I always- almost-request to receive follow up comments from other readers or the post's author elevating the post. Imagine my delight to find a comment about me on a favorite blog of mine-then only to be saddened by the comment that I was a bit harsh.
Me?  I am accustom to the occasional rap on the wrist in my own yard-keeps me on my toes, but to find a rap out and about in the neighborhood -wounded me deeply, scrapped knees at the least.
I have been called many things- witty, foolish, aloof, sarcastic-
Is that the same as harsh?
Is harsh the same as hard? I hope Not-because I do not like harsh-it suggests a lack of feeling, while hard suggests a certain strength.
Oh yes-I forgot, what about opinionated? Definitely, I have been called that- always-even as a child.
So- from there,
without further adieu , I share an opinion, Mine.

excerpted from a previous post
I think the biggest problem with the BLOGOSPHERE MANTRA is one of live and let live.  There are different blogs, there is something for everyone-that is true.
As in life- we all select different friends, clothes, lifestyles- taste vs. ostentation, tacky vs. tastes.

Designers have always sought to find an exclusive clientele by giving them something not everyone else can give them. Rendering up a beautiful room that has not been filled to the gills with stuff-stuffed into it, mediocre furniture and trendy fabrics will be a designer's calling card.

If that is what a client is seeking-don't call me.
Few  bloggers will commit to separating themselves from other blogs by simply eliminating  from their blog lists  bloggers who repost a story from a publication and cut and paste the pictures & have heavy sponsorship on their pages. I am always looking for new &  interesting original blogs to add to my blog list. If a person is writing to express themselves, educate, illuminate- they are elevating the medium they work in. I don't think for bloggers that are cutting and pasting from other web sources-  story and text are in the least concerned with originality.. taking an idea from other sources should be a way of  inspiring, expanding, offering something beyond a "copy."plagiarism is another expression- too harsh?
Yes, well-I did say you would learn something about me here.

coming up with 7 wonderfully stylish blogs is easier than
talking about myself after publishing this blog for two years- that  is harder.

when I am given an opportunity to tap7 blogs with a stylish blogger award I jump at the chance-this is a required part of  the receiving of it.

also a part of  the receiving is the sharing of 7 things about Me. that is when I balk.  Easy too- is the introduction of- if you don't already know her blog- Moira's SKEINS OF THOUGHT. One of her ongoing topics is "this is romance"... Old Movies are the topic-
I'm a fan.
& since rules are made to be broken- and I enjoy that- Here are YOUR NEW MUST READS and you can say I said so-

THIS IT WILL TELL YOU 7 THINGS ABOUT ME-at least.
I think the biggest problem with the BLOG MANTRA one of live and let live -is fear of no reciprocity from fellow bloggers.  There are diffierent blogs and there is something for everyone. Designers have always sought to find a clientele by giving them something not everyone else can find. Rendering up a beautiful room that has not been filled to the gills with stuff-stuffed into it, mediocre furniture and trendy fabrics will be a designer's calling card. Is the internet "redesigning design?"

Landscape from a Dream
Paul Nash 1936-38

I am so happy to be joining Elle Decor.com's Allison Mezzafonte for a panel discussion on the internet's influence on Design- Is the Internet Redesigning Design?  Each of the panelists offers a very different blog for any reader's pleasure. Of course my career as a designer is featured within this blog-but I blog for inspiration- what am I tuned into today?
The intersections of art, design, fashion, history. The use of language and the struggle  to say what I am thinking- to offer opinions. For me, expressing opinion is of the utmost importance. For me- what else is the point, but that one is for another day.

The panel is in Miami at DCOTA-the Design Center of the Americas on this Tuesday the 18th. It will be a whirlwind day- heading off Tuesday morning and arriving just in time to take a seat on the 2:00 panel and head back home right afterwards. I can not wait to meet the other participants and return with all the conversation,

With NEW blogs springing up every day- Beautiful images & words are springing up with them. I try to credit everything I put on this blog. I know sometimes I fail. Many of the images I feature are scanned by me from an extensive library- I only scanned them. They are not mine to claim. I am always surprised, amused, dismayed when I see bloggers paste watermark images over images they have scanned, or even more surprising- claim ownership of images from magazines, the content of magazines barely having even reached subscribers- by adding footnotes to their blogs like:
All content, photos, images and text are the property of ..unless credited. Nothing shall be copied, altered, or reused in any way without....  (Many times these images are not credited)

I have the following added at the lower portion of my own blog:

LITTLE AUGURY2008-2011
ALL PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND ORIGINAL TEXT NOT TO BE COPIED OR REPRODUCED WITHOUT PERMISSION OF OWNER
It is really all I can hope for. I appreciate another blogger noting an image was found on my blog when they use it on their own. It isn't something I expect.  I can not worry over an image I have scanned- when one does that it is part of the catalog of internet images- Simple fact. Better to credit the artist-painter or photographer than to credit a blog-I think. Photographers are in the cross hairs of this boon. The art they render is becoming no more than a paper airplane. We as bloggers should all be more conscientious about this, at least make the effort to note the artist whose work you are literally pasting in as your content.

Some bloggers claim property over the Comments readers leave. I do not. I leave comments often. I enjoy reading posts and I love leaving comments, getting comments and responding to my readers. I occasionally share comments on a subsequent post I may write with permission of the reader. For a number of months I used, with permission, a comment from a supportive blogger in my blog profile with the reader's sobriquet. In recent changes to my profile- rather than crediting the quote directly - I described and thanked them which I hoped would be appropriate.  This wasn't enough and the commenter asked to have those words removed. I completely understand & I did so. I never want anyone to fear leaving a comment, worrying that I will snatch their ideas and words as my own.
There is a fine line here- I hope in interacting with readers and other bloggers-inspiration will follow- that interaction is why I participate.

I look forward to getting my latest subscriptions to more magazines that I like to admit. I use them for inspiration, I occasionally post  their content-when I can create something to the topic.
How am I inspired? How does it relate to what interests me- the connectors of design, history and art?
I do make it a rule to never post about a magazine's current content until their next issue is published. I always get crazy  when I see the beautiful photography and content of a new & current issue tossed out on a blog before I even get a copy of the magazine. I wonder if images are scanned, grabbed off  magazine sites or offered up by publishers? I can not fathom a magazine's reasoning if that is the case. Yes- bloggers do promote magazines -alliances are formed. I know advertisers drive magazines and keep them going-but as a paying subscriber, I am infuriated by the practice. It has a great deal to do with bloggers' rush to be the "first" to get something out and numbers-Statistics. Those little statcounters floating about many blogs mean- they are counting You. You are there and therefore You are a statistic-registering your support of and readership of the blog. I have one on my blog, after a year of posting pages on Little Augury, I added the counter. I rarely air these numbers, they are for my own use and they are your  numbers as well. Many bloggers are using them for the purposes of luring advertisers and sponsors to their blogs and publishing their numbers to do so.

Where the story of blogs goes is up to the blog community, the readers and the publications we all flock to for inspiration. As more bloggers enter the field in order to share, reflect and prosper- Less and Less is certain.

I am looking forward to heading to DCOTA the Design Center of the Americas to participate with fellow bloggers in discussing  'Redesigning Design'  moderated by Allison Mezzafonte from Elledecor.com. If  you are close by or will be attending the DCOTA Winter Market 2011 on January the 18th- join us a 2:00- we will discuss how the World of the Internet has changed the World of Design.

the beauty of words

.
they are free

"Your soul is a chosen landscape
Where charming masked and costumed figures go
Playing the lute and dancing and almost
Sad beneath their fantastic disguises.

All sing in a minor key

Of all-conquering love and careless fortune
They do not seem to believe in their happiness
And their song mingles with the moonlight.

The still moonlight, sad and beautiful,

Which gives the birds to dream in the trees
And makes the fountain sprays sob in ecstasy,
The tall, slender fountain sprays among the marble statues."

"no," not Chic.

.

while we are on the Topic of overworked words (yes- we are),
take
CHIC.
How overworked is that one?
what defines, who defines? is there really that much CHIC in the world?

here is my example of CHIC. anyone Not meeting the visual standards of this particular woman is not CHIC, likely many other lovely things
but-
No,  Not CHIC.

Amy Fine Collins painted by Ike Ude

 C H I C -

1856, from Fr., originally "subtlety," perhaps related to Ger. schick  "tact, skill," from M.L.G. schikken  "arrange appropriately;" or from Fr. chicane,  from chicanerie.

smitten

.

oh- do try

lovely fellow bloggers and even beloved ones.

I know it will be hard.

do not be "smitten"

 ever again.

Exceptions:

Now lightning-struck by thee, Thou mocking eye that me in darkness watcheth: --Thus do I lie, Bend myself, twist myself, convulsed With all eternal torture, And smitten By thee, cruellest huntsman, Thou unfamiliar--GOD.-Nietzsche

That fights with Fate, is smitten grievously. -Sophocles

Middle English smiten, from Old English smtan, to smear.
Old English smītan; related to Old High German smīzan to smear,
Gothic bismeitan, Old Swedish smēta to daub

Holofernes having been
"smitten"
by Judith

What exaggeration could there be in the practice of a doctrine wherein one was bidden to turn the other cheek when one was smitten, and give one's cloak if one's coat were taken?-Tolstoy's Anna Karenina

poor Anna.

For it had not been very long prior to the Pequod's sailing from Nantucket, that he had been found one night lying prone upon the ground, and insensible; by some unknown, and seemingly inexplicable, unimaginable casualty, his ivory limb having been so violently displaced, that it had stake-wise smitten, and all but pierced his groin; nor was it without extreme difficulty that the agonizing wound was entirely cured. -Melville's Moby  Dick

Thereupon she approached him, turned the coverlet back, and saw that he was stiff and cold-- that he had died suddenly, as though smitten with a stroke. Dostoyevsky's Poor Folk

A lad whose face had borne an expression of exalted courage, the majesty of he who dares give his life, was, at an instant, smitten abject. Crane's Red Badge of Courage

& it will not be easy
for that sensation to charm, to cavort- to be kittenish  will indeed overtake you.

when it does
resist &

think of A.E.Housman's prophetic words:

O, I am smitten with a hatchet's jaw;
And that in deed and not in word alone.

& think of Judith.

read and see the story in paintings of Judith and Holofernes at It's About Time.

I find continued joy in this blog. In talking with a dearest friend yesterday about this assemblage, I realized what I have been trying to do with the adding and deleting  of blog recommendations labelled PEOPLE-(to my right)  most of the blogs are written by one person, there are several here that have an ensemble cast. I can not even imagine, nor do I want to know how many blogs are out there-
Too Many?
Possibly.
We each find our own level of taste, quality and topic.
Happiness reigns.
But am I learning anything? This is the question I am applying to PEOPLE lately. What am I finding out at this moment, I didn't know yesterday, and hour ago?
Do I want to know?
Need to know? Even better.

I have kept Little Augury wide open on Topic because I am interested in many things, reading, following politics, to my Republican friends & clients- I Am-  You might feel- A Hopeless Progressive (worse than any Liberal), but that should not surprise You-
Does it?

Where do I stand? As our conversation continued yesterday- one mention of a blog in particular elicited from Friend this:  HE/SHE has an OPINION. We know where said Blogger stands. Do you know where I stand? Sometimes I wonder. I certainly don't want to alienate anyone-But if the tenor of Little Augury changes a bit or more than,  I want to know If you agree, disagree. Now this is not an open invitation to Nasty comments, don't demean me-You will be sorry, but don't hesitate to open a spot that is sore on the subject at hand. I would be less a host-If you felt you could not speak your mind.

I do write about fashion- No apologies. It is relevant.
Consider Elizabeth 1- where would she have been without her clothes? Exposed to the world and every threat there after. What she wore signified HOW she wanted to be Seen. Impregnable. And this with good reason-Every Man at Court wished to get into her knickers.
Joan of Arc- the fair maid of Orleans-how else-other than divine intervention-could she have faced the enemy. Certainly she claimed divine guidance-but she was no fool. She dressed for Success.
LOUIS 14 another fashion plate-
Pure Power Play, He liked to watch. they Mimicked Him, aped after Him.
He Ruled and not just  by the seat of his pants or as Fashion Arbiter but as Architect Designer wielding his rod- measuring stick.
Versailles was his calling card-and He had everyone at his fingertips.
HE liked to Watch too.

that brings me to HOUSES. I talk about Houses, You expected that, Right? I "oathed" to do more House posts in January, I think now I should admit defeat and say-I will Never write more about one thing than another. It just does not suit me. It will be whatever the day or night brings and hopefully that will bring YOU JOY, along with knowing.

Reciprocity. I am working on this too. Hence the changes to PEOPLE. What are they giving Me in return? This is not about You comment on my blog-I comment on Yours, though all of that is Nice and Neat and I do it quite a lot. I personally think it is Kind. Others in the same venue do not. Or say I can not possibly comment on everyone that comments on MINE! You should know what I think of that.

I want to get something from my PEOPLE- and I do. There are many PEOPLE listed over there to my right-that don't know Little Augury exists-But I get something from them ALL. & for that-
I Thank You. If you have something to offer and you are not one of my PEOPLE tell me-
I want to KNOW something I did not KNOW.
I want to be challenged. I want to learn. I want to give something back to you here too.
If not today, tomorrow.
Return. I have this offering to my People- New People- PERSPECTIVES really.

orbiting in a different sphere

.

I adore lifestyle blogs- glimpses into the world of other bloggers- here dubbed BLOGSTYLE.
I like to watch- simply put-Be it a train wreck of mock Kelly Wearstler ,Vervoordt or a Zen garden worthy of the master Bodhidharma.

How do other people live?

Formally, Informally?
a house steered by a regulatory commission? granted the addition of children into a BLOGSTYLE calls for rules of a sort-blogstyles must have structure.
I have so many BLOGSTYLES that I follow. What strikes me are the extremes-the creative or THE- I did this today and My accomplishments are as follows...

Where do I fall? My little postings are an honest look at the world beyond my own.

Here within the walls of my world  ALWAYS-I require,
Comfort.
I SHALL have it.

A jumble of Indian quilts and faux fur throws  number in the 10's around the house. Three on my bed. One as a covering on a french day bed in my upstairs hall. Two stoles-a wool plaid, a paisley throw collect in a chair where Remus the Cat sleeps. That Cat chair- just off what was called MY OFFICE is now REMUS' OFFICE. He does- everything in there-amidst my fabric library, files, printers, work tables- Remus is often in his office, he dearly loves the fax.

At the top of the stairs- A Guest Room, at the moment occupied by my oldest Brother who spends the winter months at our house. The room with its low walls- typically beckons a more Comtesse Elizabeth de Feuillide type with its prie dieux, old French painted bed and armoire, dainty chandelier, French chair- Well, Just Everything French, but with the Jane twist. Right now it holds all Brother's belongings- a room for a Mountain Man. The French bed is covered in a quilt-a couple actually, and down comforter.

In my Sitting Room- the hub of the house more indulgences-meaning more quilts and throws. Zetta, my dog, holds court in one of my mother's  generous wing chairs-toile covered back and fur lined seat-all custom covered for Mademoiselle Zet. Quite comfortable.

I honestly love to lounge* on my furniture whether sofa in the Sitting Room, or more formal pieces- a French chair or Swedish settee.
To loll,
to laze,
to idle,
to relax- in a word
COMFORT.

Mine is a very informal household. Formal furnishings- but lived in, lived on, Cat and Dog On.
Everyone must be comfortable about and amongst us.

There are few rules- little structure-I can-there are no little ones to schedule-alas, I will never have a child! (from one of my  favourite movies-Black Narcissus.
I abhor a schedule- place 1 in front of my nose and I will scream like the little brat I would bring forth-if I had a child.
The only time I have to organize is when I work with clients-always plopping myself in my SUV and traveling about an hour to be Designer.

I say each to his own~
but just for comparison-
A Sunday in the Life of Little A.

rise at 7 for an airing out of Mlle. Zetta- a nibble of food for Zet as well.

Open the house-a time I always revel in- even if it is 5 a.m.-Zetta's previous alarm clock setting- which I am desperately trying to undo- I did say I hated a schedule.
Open curtains, blinds, shutters-

I always light candles. I prefer the Diptyque ones-the smokey woodsy sort-or I will take an intense scent of their Tuberose. Right now I am burning Thornhill from DL & Co.- a perfect Winter scent. Venturing beyond those two would be reckless but I have found Chelsea Flowers to be heady, evoking a Spring moment in the midst of snow.

Today was civil-I actually made the coffee immediately- a something or another blend-better than my own Folger's (you may gag-but do so quietly)- the current coffee brewing is my brother's.
Since I was in bed by just after midnight reading-I got about 6 hours-it will hold Me.

Ponder,
do I get the NYTimes in?
or wait for Brother to come down and trot out-
I wait.
I check emails,
I read-
I take a nap right there on the sofa- Zetta sleeps-oblivious to all the activity.

I chat with Brother,
then Mother.
I dine-
I breakfast-on what? ah, Yes- cheese toast- whole wheat bread from Whole Foods (where else?) and as my dear friend 9 year old Ewan would say- American cheese (being cheddar)

I Dress-Jeans, sweat shirt- pony tail, Clark's desert boots-do they still call them that?
Mine are Blue-very blue-
Don't step on them.
I ask my Bro- should I wear earrings?
He replies-By all means.

Where are we going-you ask?

Off to my own personal HELL -the grocery store.
I absolutely hate it- We have agreed to split the list, less time, less pain.
I still hate it. I actually try to weasel my way out but
No go-
(no boring details about what one buys in a somewhat rural Food Lion)
but I did snag some capers.
If there is anything worse that the shopping- it is the putting away.
On hand for this is my Mother, she still follows her Mother's protocol about putting away groceries-Wash the refrigerated items.
Well then- that's Her job.

I concoct a soup- my Auntie refers to it as black soup-
Here is what goes in it-(no proportions or brand names) spinach, cannellini beans, broth, shallots, garlic, sage, fennel seed to taste.
If this is any semblance of an Actual soup- Do Tell.

Here is the amazing thing about my day-with all the talk of cleaning and housekeeping over at Darlington House- I decide to get with the dusting!
Dear God can it be?
Reggie Darling of Darlington House has either inspired me or shamed me into spit shining my furniture.
Here is what I wore- No not really a uniform, but thought it might be fun to note- Gray sweat pants( colour of choice for me- No juicy sets  & a T-shirt (I had to unload the  grocery store sweat shirt ) Putting groceries away makes me hot (right now there are a few very close friends that are saying- Everything Makes You Hot!)
The T-shirt is a London T an exact copy of the one worn by Joey Ramone from here
When cleaning-I try to assume the role of my wonderful daylady cleaner- G. How would G. do this?
I always do a much better job if I approach the work this way-

Well- here I sit tapping away at the keys- writing this right Now.
&
NO
I absolutely did not watch the Super Bowl
rather
Bright Star.
I cried.
Now in the great tradition of a famous London resident-

...and so to bed.
