The New Colossus
.
(all photographs credit below)
Not (but of late) like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name, Mother of Exiles.
From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she with silent lips.
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name, Mother of Exiles.
Men seek to keep her chained-just burning dull ember.
From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she with silent lips.
Yet is it pomp We now seek?
What will become of words that once beckoned All?
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these,
the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Late-born and woman-souled I dare not hope
The freshness of the elder lays, the might
Of manly, modern passion shall alight
Upon my Muse's lips, nor may I cope
(Who veiled and screened by womanhood must grope)
With the world's strong-armed warriors and recite
The dangers, wounds, and triumphs of the fight;
Twanging the full-stringed lyre through all its scope.
But if thou ever in some lake-floored cave
O'erbrowed by rocks, a wild voice wooed and heard,
Answering at once from heaven and earth and wave,
Lending elf-music to thy harshest word,
Misprize thou not these echoes that belong
To one in love with solitude and song.
Emma Lazarus
The Big Lie will be heard again- and if it is heard long enough- like all lies-it gathers believers. This is what the Senator is hoping, but for the moment, Planned Parenthood carries on- until the next fight.

HON: a woman's Right
.
I've always been fascinated by the work of Niki de Saint Phalle. I think again & often, Vogue magazine and Diana Vreeland brought the World to my Southern Gothic World in the 1960's. Born just before that year, I followed the landscape of art, interiors and fashion in those pages-even if my mother didn't always like what she saw-I got to see. It was between the two of us -
WE, the women of the house- a woman's decision-a woman's choice.
Artist Niki Saint Phalle creating her monumental HON ,Swedish for "she", commissioned for the Moderna Museet, Stockholm. Hon a giant reclining Nana, Saint Phalle's every woman sculpture, with an interior environment - museum goers walked through the giant Nana's open legs and entered the interior womb through the sculpture's vaginal like portal.
The Hon 's overwhelming proportions help to emphasizes a woman's oppression- her mythical power- and her energy- often simultaneously. Saint Phalle had suffered a nervous breakdown before she turned to art, bringing that raw emotion of loss and return to all of her major works.
The Hon must have been a culmination of her own triumphs & own wounds dealing with the frustrating societal boundaries that existed for women.
The Saint Phalle work is no less powerful today-especially in a period that Congress has chosen to strip women of their rRghts- the right to decent affordable health care and the right to choose. It is no wonder that it's still a man's world-as long a woman's health and welfare are controlled by them.
Knowing a woman has the power to give Life-it is typical that a Man should think he can control that Life and its creator.

NOW. Keep your voices lifted. Show up, show out, and make them do the right thing. Stop the war on choice. And to that I say, A woman's --not a man's - decision! " Reverend Marcia Dyson

Every child is an artist.
The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. Picasso
the idea that school children should not be taught music and dance at school-but can get these immortal gifts at home is ludicrous.
Art is never chaste. It ought to be forbidden to ignorant innocents, never allowed into contact with those not sufficiently prepared. Yes, art is dangerous.
Where it is chaste, it is not art. Picasso

Art is not the application of a canon of beauty but what the instinct and the brain can conceive beyond any canon. When we love a woman we don’t start measuring her limbs. Picasso

the idea that school children should not be taught music and dance at school-but can get these immortal gifts at home is ludicrous.
“Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again.
And what do we teach our children?
We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France.
When will we also teach them what they are?
We should say to each of them:
Do you know what you are?
You are a marvel.
You are unique.
In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you.
Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move.
You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven.
You have the capacity for anything.
Yes, you are a marvel.
And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel?
You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children.” Picasso

I have always been pretty politically passionate-I was a child of the Nixon hearings. Mine was the family that watch the 1974 televised hearings of the House Judiciary Committee on our summer beach trip. The committee made up of 21 Democrats, & 17 Republicans -was there to consider the question of the impeachment of President Richard M. Nixon.
I love blogging and always want people to come to little augury for something different, maybe not what they expect-or even want, to provoke thought on occasion. I see things within my center that matter to me. I continue to think it is important that equal rights for gay men and women be fought for. No- I am not gay.
I continue to think poverty is something everyone should be ashamed of. No- I am not poor. I continue to think a young woman's reproductive rights should be her own- No- I have not faced the decision to have an abortion.
I continue to provoke this blog to look beyond what is light, pretty or of the moment. Why?
& then- I get a comment like this:
ANONYMOUS-
Apparently you think people are too irresponsible to take care of their own reproductive rights. A condescending attitude that far surpasses racism.
I am not surprised that one of your ilk would post such a disgusting, vile photo in a lame attempt to make your point. Perhaps you can articulate why the taxpayer should provide irresponsible people with health services when the average taxpayer can barely make ends meet? I'll wait.

as does the New Oxford American Dictionary
the New Oxford American Dictionary declared "refudiate" the top word in 2010 — a verb that Sarah Palin coined. the dictionary defended Palin's use of the word. "From a strictly lexical interpretation of the different contexts in which Palin has used 'refudiate,' we have concluded that neither 'refute' nor 'repudiate' seems consistently precise, and that 'refudiate' more or less stands on its own, suggesting a general sense of 'reject."
Her Explanation:
“’Refudiate,’ ‘misunderestimate,’ ‘wee-wee'd up.’ English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!”

of biblical proportions
And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal:
and in the midst of the throne,
and round about the throne,
were four beasts full of eyes before and behind
And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever:
and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image
They were full of eyes within:
and they rest not day and night
And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire
Thou hast created all things,
and for thy pleasure they are and were created
I will shew unto thee the judgement
of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters
And the second poured out his bowl on the sea;
and it became blood, as of a dead man;
and every living soul died in the sea
it is not about armageddon
it is not about the bible
it is not about symbolism
whatever you believe-
it is.

Virginia for Lovers ?
.
Are Virginians celebrating Nat Turner's Rebellion this month in their great state? Nat Turner's Rebellion was a Slave Rebellion-August 1831 in Southampton County Virginia that left 60 white people dead; the rebellion lasted just a few days-the rebels were easily defeated. Would it be appropriate to celebrate a rebellion that ended with 60 deaths? How many deaths does it take to make an official History month in Virginia 2010? Perhaps 6,947? This-the number of soldiers who Died in during the Civil War from battle wounds or disease from Virginia.* Just Imagine the outrage if this month was Nat Turner's Rebellion History Month, Would there be outrage? This month in Virginia is Confederate History Month (read this)The toll the Civil War took on the people of Virginia was great. The history of the state's role in the war is apparent to all Virginians. Why an official Confederate History Month?
The absence of acknowledging Slavery as a chief cause of the Civil War-still with out greatest casualties of war as a nation. The 2010 Virginia Proclamation made by Republican Governor Bobby McDonnell said he did not include a reference to slavery because "there were any number of aspects to that conflict between the states. Obviously, it involved slavery. It involved other issues. But I focused on the ones I thought were most significant for Virginia." To deny the obvious- to glorify the war in the way this governor has done-sets the great state back-about 50 years. This is the first time in about 10 years the state has marked the war in a way to promote tourism.the State's slogan was once VIRGINIA is for LOVERS. McDonnell issued an apology the next day here
As a proud child of the South and the 60's, I find romanticizing the devastation of the Civil War to the South and its loss of life futile. Many of the generals on both sides had studied at West Point-Lee was offered the command of the union forces. His devotion to Virginia and his family outweighed acceptance and Lee returned to Virginia to his fate.
My ancestors in North Carolina fought in the Civil War- they were Southerners. My ancestors from Maryland-fought for the union -and brother fought against brother-where is the glory?

"You must study to be frank with the world:
frankness is the child of honesty and courage.
Say just what you mean to do on every occasion,
and take it for granted that you mean to do right."
"What a cruel thing is war:
to separate and destroy families and friends,
and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world;
to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors,
and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world."
McDonnell issued an apology the next day here
"So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery,
I am rejoiced that Slavery is abolished.
I believe it will be greatly for the interest of the South.
So fully am I satisfied of this that I would have cheerfully lost all that I have lost by the war, and have suffered all that I have suffered to have this object attained."

Enlightened Architecture
.
The rotunda at the University of Virginia was planned by Thomas Jefferson to represent the authority of nature and the power of reason. The classical architecture of Palladio best represented the ideals of Jefferson's vision for the architecture. The University's Library was originally housed in the Rotunda-Jefferson considered the library to be the beacon of enlightenment and wisdom.
Jefferson is the only US President to found a university- and to design one.

I dreamed...
.
Last night I dreamed the Bible was being rewritten- though it has been done with this venerable book time and again- I thought why? Is it possible the next text the Texas Board of Education will "work" on is this one. Though the Bible is subject to vast interpretation-why not narrow that now so it will state Christian Conservative values? Surely the founding fathers of that great book meant it- their way. No? OF course there are always a couple of crackpots in any text where a number of writers exist.
Can these educators undertake such a task? eradicate the Radicals? Problems arise.

The Texas Board of Education is rewriting American History. What will be taught in the classroom? The Gospel according to Texas? The powerful influence of this board reverberates through the country- Texas buys lots of TexT books- publishers will look to the Texas standards for guidance in content, vomitously creating a poisonous rippling effect. The board, whose members are elected, has influence beyond Texas because the state is one of the largest buyers of textbooks. In the digital age, however, that influence has diminished as technological advances have made it possible for publishers to tailor books to individual states. the TIMES here
Cynthia Dunbar, a lawyer from Richmond who is a strict constitutionalist and thinks the nation was founded on Christian beliefs, managed to cut Thomas Jefferson from a list of figures whose writings inspired revolutions in the late 18th century and 19th century, replacing him with St. Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin and William Blackstone. (Jefferson is not well liked among conservatives on the board because he coined the term “separation between church and state.”)
There is a reason for those swags and sweeping gestures of grandeur in the Founding Father's portraits.
“The Enlightenment was not the only philosophy on which these revolutions were based,” Ms. Dunbar said. NYTIMES here
“For happily the government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection, should demean themselves as good citizens . . . while every one shall sit under his own vine and figtree, and there shall be none to make him afraid.” GW
Dr. McLeroy, a dentist by training, pushed through a change to the teaching of the civil rights movement to ensure that students study the violent philosophy of the Black Panthers in addition to the nonviolent approach of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He also made sure that textbooks would mention the votes in Congress on civil rights legislation, which Republicans supported.
“Republicans need a little credit for that,” he said. “I think it’s going to surprise some students.” from the NYTIMES here
