Mercedes-Benz Young Classics Revisited, a Recollection Quartett

For the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, MoMu, the Fashion Museum in Antwerp and Mercedes-Benz, invited Belgian art director Frederik Heyman and 4 fashion designers - Bernhard Willhelm, Peter Pilotto, Henrik Vibskov and Mikio Sakabe - to create 4 installations.

At the heart of each installation stands a Mercedes-Benz Young Classics. From these cars from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, 4 cars were selected. For each of them, photographer and artist Frederik Heyman created a unique decor and used it only once in a photographic illustration. Humor and a surrealist visual vocabulary are part of his artistic signature. His decors are built completely by hand, in collaboration with a team of sculptors and artists. The 4 fashion designers have added their own visions to the installations.

Sarah Illenberger's Infographics

Berlin-based Sarah Illenberger is well know for her use of humble materials—paper, styrofoam, cold cuts, etc.—for illustrative purposes. Since posting a piece she did for The New York Times Magazine, I’ve been wanting to show some of her infographics, which display the same inventiveness with imagery and materials. Though her work is often admired for its meticulous handwork and attention to detail (see recent project, smart fortwo), Illenberger’s approach to data/info display demonstrates that her true skill lies not in her hands, but in her mind. They are refreshing examples of infographic possibilities that exist beyond the computer.

Eco Luxury, Eco Friendly Cars

The Leases are coming up on our vehicles so we are checking into whats the newest in eco friendly, eco luxury cars. Ranging in price from $44K - $60K This is what we have been looking at. Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BLUETEC, VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG TDI, BMW XDRIVE35D, and AUDI Q7 TDI.

What’s new in these cars is the use of a urea fluid, or nitrogenous compound, called AdBlue, which is squirted into the engine’s exhaust stream to scrub pollutants away. Hybrid cars, most famously the Toyota Prius (I am currently driving one), are the chief competitors for a green badge, and both diesels and hybrids get the same tax break for alternative fuel vehicles. But critics of hybrids complain about squishy regenerative brakes, transmissions that seem to shift aimlessly, poor acceleration, and reduced cargo space due to the cars’ huge nickel-metal-hydride batteries. And because hybrids are so new, little longevity data is available.
