Who is Madame Peripetie, part two

Madame Peripetie aka Sylwana Zybura is a polish photographer based in Germany. Unfortunately there is very little info about her, except for the details I provided on an earlier post. The conceptual photographer is greatly influenced by surrealism, dadaism as well as the new wave era of the 80s, British post punk scene and the avant-garde theater of Robert Wilson.

Her latest series of photographs titled "Birds for Tata Christiane" are as striking as her older photographic works.

The Florence Issue - Simply You

All Shots Copyright Carla Coulson

I promised a couple of months ago that I would share with you a shoot that I did in Florence. We had the great fortune to work in the most spectacular location, the Four Seasons Hotel in Florence. Once the home of the Florentine nobile family Della Gheradesca, the Palazzo della Gheradesca has been transformed into the most sumptious hotel.

The noble floor decorations have been left in their original state, divine frescoes, incredible flooring and corridors full of ancient statues and chandeliers. Where could have been a better location than to shoot our 'Mistress' story than this divine hotel. Our story was, the mistress who waits for her lover in a beautiful hotel but he never shows up!

I promised also to tell you what lightinng we used to create this look. I tried to keep the light very even (though I couldn't resist a more dramatic lighting in the second shot of the girl on the sofa).

To light the background we used a flash with a light bowl on it (kind of like a white world globe) that we bounced into the ceilings. It created a light that lit the background evenly with almost no shadows. For the model we used a separate light, a strip softbox to light her lengthways which helped when we were in a corner in the bathroom. Less bulky than a normal softbox!

Hair and make-up was done by the talented Paolo Baroncelli, styling by Louise Hilsz and the beautiful model is Angelica Sulzbach. Shot for Simply You.

Fashion - Fashion Photography Through Time

Fashion - Fashion Photography Through Time at Fotografiska is the most comprehensive exhibition of fashion photography ever to be shown in Europe. The exhibit features more than 200 works by 51 internationally famous photographers.
Fashion reflects the development of fashion photography over the decades, from Man Ray's experimental compositions in the 1920s, via iconic figures such as Irving Penn and Richard Avedon, to the supermodel cult fostered by Steven Meisel and Peter Lindbergh in the 1990s. A few acclaimed 21st-century photographers are also featured, including Michelangelo Di Battista, Mikael Jansson and Esther Haase.

"Today, fashion photography is an art in its own right. A visual language that is both powerful and has extended the boundaries for what photography can be. For more than 90 years, we have been influenced and astonished by this dream world that is conjured up before us," says Jan Broman, founder and director of Fotografiska.

Peter Lindbergh: " On Street "

Whether he is photographing Kate Moss or Catherine Deneuve, the melancholy pictures of Peter Lindbergh look behind the star cult, styling and make-up to reveal the individual personality in all its strength. Born in 1944 in Lissa, Poland, Lindbergh grew up in Germany, and currently lives in Paris, Arles and New York. He began photography in 1971 and established himself as an advertising photographer. He is considered to be one of the world's preeminent fashion photographers, particularly in black and white, and is credited with helping create the supermodel phenomenon of the 1990s. As a visual teller of tales, Peter Lindbergh frequently arranges his compositions to resemble famous film scenes from early German cinema or from the free dance of the 1920s.
Despite a Berlin exhibition that made its debut in September and another set for Shanghai next year, Lindbergh is very much rooted in the moment. "Fashion photography has gotten a little lost. There is a lot of carnival going on. The hair has gotten too crazy and the make-up. At the moment, everybody is trying to do young. They have to look young or dress young. Youth is so overdone," he said. "All the advertising and magazine covers today - they don't look like natural women. For me, that's a real pity. There's all this retouching. A little humanity would do good, especially in fashion photography."
