Night Plane - EVR live mix

Night Plane live on EVR, January 28th, 2010

In case you didn't feel like showing up, here's a link to the archived EVR stream. Thanks again for Still Life for allowing brutes and fools like us to cause trouble live on the internet. And special thanks to NP official hype man DJ Loud Noises. stay tuned for Loud's forthcoming mixtape, "God Hypes Those Who Hype Themselves."

Rebel Rap: A Mix of Haitian Rap Kreyol

A good friend of mine is, like myself, a graduate student in literature. Over the past several years, her regard for the academic world has visibly waned, replaced by a growing fascination for creative expression and Eastern religion. Her waning regard turned into open disgust, however, in a recent Facebook post, in which she bemoaned the university conferences on Haiti that were being organized in the wake of the island's recent earthquake disaster. Look at these sad academics, my friend opined, all they can do is organize conferences instead of really helping, really changing, really acting. To her this only underscored the stuffy pointlessness of the university.

It must be said here that action is never the point of the university. Conferences and papers and peer-reviewed journals can never take the place of, say, an immense international rescue effort designed to minimize the ravages of a nationwide disaster. The university can't be criticized for being itself, it is responding to the news of the day in its own language, that's exactly its task. So is the task of the DJ in this situation. Will a mix of Haitian rap save a life? Maybe, actually, if listening to it reminds you that you should donate to the relief effort. Is the point of the mix to save a life? No. the point of the mix is to respond to the events in Haiti in its own language, in music language.

Props to our friend Still Life for assembling some nasty-ass tracks. Enjoy.

Happy holidays and stuff. There, I said it. I'm writing this from home in Austin while my Dad, bro and I watch Dark Knight on Blu-Ray. I made fajitas with chorizo and yams. Still Life files this edit, a cut up of a holiday-themed afro-funk deep jams perfect for any remaining egg nog ragers still on the agenda before Santa day. Also, is Pee Pee Dynamite the best name for..well, the best name for anything, really? Afro-funk singer, for sure. It'd also be a good name for a dog. Or an airplane. "The Boeing PeePee Dynamite."

Enjoy Pee Pee and your holiday respite. I'll be broadcasting from Austin until New Year's, when I'm going to see Blonde Redhead back in Manhattan..

"The new edition of The Raw & The Crooked is a run through 60's and 70's psychedelic jams that seem to fit the brisk temperature outside right now. Smashed together mixtape style, of course."

Podcast: The Raw & The Crooked 005: Cumbia Edition

The latest edition of The Raw & The Crooked is a bit different than previous editions.  If focuses mostly on the new cumbia sounds coming out of Argentina from folks like ZZK Records and Bersa Discos.  Part reggae, part latin, part 8 bit nintendo.  And of course the usual amount of dirty raps and 808 hand claps.  Enjoy.

"Here we go again with some more squeals, shrieks and shatters from the mix series that's three parts evil, one part good old fashioned smiles and moonbeams.  Two points if you email me back with the record I jacked for this month's cover.  Enjoy."

DJ Still Life: The Raw & The Crooked Vol. 2

The latest from trusted AC associate DJ Still Life..."Volume 2 of The Raw & the Crooked has dropped. Reflective of the sticky heat, perhaps, there's of bit of dub aesthetic mixed in with the usual barrage of bust your shit open beats, rock screeches, and crunch crunch crunch. Hope it dirties up your summer."

Podcast: The Raw and the Crooked

AC associate Stephen Bolles aka DJ Still Life has a new monthly podcast going, here's vol.1:

"Passing along the first volume of my new podcast series with my Sleeping Giant fam. It’s called The Raw and the Crooked, and will be dropping on the third Thursday of every month. Basically jagged beats and other fucked up shit from the crates that I don’t get to play out all that often. No tracklist for now, but I’m sure you know some of these tracks, so feel free to play name that beat. Hope it rattles yr brain."

Some deep back-of-the-crate break work. Also nice appropriation of the cover from "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus.

Another nice appropriation of "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is in the 1983 vampire film The Hunger. Basically what we want to say to you is, you should be watching more stylish 80s erotic horror movies. Like this and "Cat People" for example. Also "Angel Heart," where Mickey Rourke and Lisa Bonet have a epic lovemaking session where blood starts raining from the walls and they scream and stuff. Also De Niro plays the devil.

In "The Hunger" Catherine Deneuve plays a 2000 year old vampire and Bowie is her lover. They meet Susan Sarandon and then Catherine and Susan's characters do it.

In this scene Sarandon confronts Deneuve when she finds out she's become infected. She has a cool 80s like laser-shiny trenchcoat. And Deneuve is just awesome.
