alice in auguryland

.

never again talk to me of the useless chatter of facebook- just the other day-
Liz posted a 2002ish photograph of her summer at PENLAND.

I commented :       Oh, Alice!

to which one of LizALICE's friend (RS) replied:

"You couldn't deny that,
Even if you tried with both hands."

"I don't deny things with my hands,"
Alice objected.

"Nobody said you did," said the Red Queen.
"I said you couldn't if you tried."

I'd say that is fairly perfect- brilliant even,
whatever the fb naysayers may say.
I say nay.

thank you LT, RS & fb.

a house with a Swing iii

.

I always equate summers with childhood -as a child I never remember being hot. For me the SWING is synonymous with Summer, Family and Memory.

My mother wrote & recited this poem to me growing up, &; we would swing:

“By grasping twin ropes in eager small hands & standing tall on my toes,
I came down with a flop on the old wooden board, & directed my efforts, to Slow to & Froes.
The leaves overhead rustled, as I pulled at the helm of my ship.
I gave them the eye as I took to the sky, promising half turns and dips!
Up Up & Away, touching the sky, feet high above the stone wall.
The swing in the tree was a space ship to me as I traveled to Rome & Bombay.
No time can erase my excursions in space and my childhood’s glorious days.”

I will always live in a house with a swing.

The List: a Singer Songwriter's PhD

.

I saw Roseanne Cash at Duke's Page Auditorium this week. Steeped in the deepest roots of American music-the Carter Family and daughter of iconic Johnny Cash- Roseanne Cash has mastered the art of writing a perfectly crafted lyric. Her music, her voice and the control she maintains over it all is a performance called The List. At the age of 18, her father gave her a list of 100 Songs, it was her Education- he said. He must have known this daughter would be forever immersed in Music. Roseanne learned her lessons well- Performing just a few songs from the List of 100, Roseanne was joined on stage by Bruce Springsteen for a duet. He happened to be on campus and sang Sea of Heartache (on the List) and recorded it for the List album.*

Read my niece Liz's interview with Roseanne Cash here  it is pretty great I must say.
*Rosanne Cash has been nominated for a 2010 Grammy for "Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals" for Sea of Heartbreak, a duet with Bruce Springsteen that appears on her critically acclaimed album The List.

an 80th

.
today we celebrate my Mother's 80th Birthday!

April 12

I stood still and was a tree amid the wood,
Knowing the truth of things unseen before;
Of Daphne and the laurel bow
And that god-feasting couple old
that grew elm-oak amid the wold.
'Twas not until the gods had been
Kindly entreated, and been brought within
Unto the hearth of their heart's home
That they might do this wonder thing;
Nathless I have been a tree amid the wood
And many a new thing understood
That was rank folly to my head before.

A MULE IS A...

Not everything you know about the MULE is true.

Some things are-

Mules fly South for the winter. You may say- Mules fly?
Yes.
South?
Yes- at least one I know has migrated from Chicago to Knoxville here
so what about a return in the spring?
This- A stubborn mule- refuses to return at this point.

They also exhibit a higher cognitive intelligence than their parent species - horses and donkeys.

Mules are highly intelligent. They tend to be curious by nature. A mule generally will not let the rider put it in harm's way.

The mule possesses the sobriety, patience, endurance.

The mule shows a natural resistance to disease and insects.

Some "facts" about the MULE you don't know.
